Crucial Breakdown Of Down Comforters
A down or down alternative comforter can offer a cozy respite in winter, but before you rush out to buy one, there are some things you need to know. First of all, if you're confused about what a down comforter is, let me explain. The "down" filling in a down comforter is the feathers from geese or ducks. "Fill power" is a term you need to become familiar with if you are purchasing a down comforter. Fill power directly relates to the amount of warmth you will get from a down comforter and is also an indicator of the quality of the down.
One ounce of down with a fill power of 650 means this: one ounce of that down takes up 650 cubic inches. So if a comforter has a fill power of 450, it means that one ounce of the down inside that comforter will take up 450 cubic inches. The higher the fill power, the higher the quality of the down and the more warmth it provides. Also, the higher the fill power the warmer you get with less weight. So higher fill power means more warmth, and more fluffiness while also having a comforter that is lightweight.
You don't really have to have a high fill power though. It's all related to how warm you want to be. If you live in a cold area a high fill power comforter is nice to have in the winter. A lower fill power comforter is nice in the summer or if you live in an area with a warm climate. But I've found that the 550 down comforter I own is comfortable in both the summer and the winter. And I live in a fairly cool climate.
Another thing to make sure you look for is a comforter that has baffling. When a comforter is baffled, it has different sections so that the stuffing stays spread evenly through the product and doesn't move around too much. I made the mistake of buying one once that did not have sealed baffles. What happens is that, over time, the filling shifts around and lumps up in one area. To find a down a down comforter that won't have filling that shifts look for either baffling where the baffles are sewn through all the way or a comforter that has closed baffles or end-to-end baffles. If a comforter has closed baffles or end-to-end baffles the package will usually clearly state so.
To keep your down comforter clean, cover it with a duvet cover. A duvet cover is like a cocoon for your comforter. This will be great for decorating and keep your comforter clean for a long time.
Another thing to look at is thread count. Generally speaking, the higher the thread count, the softer and more luxurious the fabric.
Owning a down comforter is a great little luxury. You don't have to buy the most expensive down comforter to get a great quality product either. And if you take care of your comforter it can last for a long time, making it a good investment.

What Is The Largest Comforter Made?
If you have ever found yourself fighting for covers at night then you can appreciate why an oversized comforter or super sized comforter would be a nice option to have. In the United States mattresses sizes are pretty standardized and usually range in sizes as shown below:
- Twin 39 x 75
- Twin XL 39 x 80
- Full 54 x 75
- Queen 60 x 80
- King 76 x 80
Please note that Olympic queens, Split kings and other specialty sizes are not covered here due to the smaller amount of beds sold in the USA.
Most mattresses are between and 12 and 15 inches these days with some peaking out at 22 to 24 inches high. Why do beds come in so many sizes? Of course there is a marketing story involved in addition to how some furniture makers utilize platform beds which may need higher height mattresses in order to allow comfortable bed entry. In America bigger is better and this applies to down and down alternative comforters covered in this story.
One of the most common complaints consumers have with comforters, blankets and quilts is how small the items can be sold as. This is because many retail stores have a fixed retail price they want to sell items at and manufacturers work backwards to hit those price points. Generally speaking the 108 x 98 inch king size comforter is oversized enough for most consumers. However, if you have a deep plush bed and or you are constantly having night time tug of war with the comforters then you might want to consider large king sizes. A ‘Super King' size comforter can run between 116 x 100, 120 x 98, or 114 x 118. Sometimes the super sized comforters are called ‘Designer Kings'. These super size king comforters are great because you get the extra coverage you may crave all without having to buy a custom made comforter which can run in the thousands.
One thing to consider when buying a super king is if you will need a duvet cover to fit the super large comforter. Many bedding catalogs offer super size duvets that fit the 116 x 100 size range but most don't cover the larger super kings like 120 x 98 or 114 x 118.
