Speed Racer $5.94 Based on the 1960s Japanese-manga-derived animated TV series of the same name, SPEED RACER follows the adventures of the title character (Emile Hirsch), a young race car driver who sits behind the wheel of the lightning-fast Mach 5 vehicle. Aided by his family, which includes Pops Racer (John Goodman) and Mom Racer (Susan Sarandon), and his devoted doe-eyed girlfriend, Trixie (Christina Ricci), Speed racks up victory after victory, but still lives in the shadow of his late older brother, Rex (Scott Porter), who died in a race. When Speed garners the wrath of Royalton Industries, he must team up with the enigmatic Racer X (Matthew Fox) to defeat the ruthless corporation.Written and directed by Larry and Andy Wachowski, the masterminds behind the MATRIX films, SPEED RACER replaces the gritty techno patina of that blockbuster series with a polished, brightly hued virtual reality. Though the eye-popping visuals threaten to eclipse the acting, the fine cast gamely makes the most of their green-screen environment, particularly the likable Hirsch, who won acclaimed for his decidedly different INTO THE WILD role, and LOST's always-noble Fox. Adding to the movie's giddy mood are Paulie Litt and his chimp companion, who provide comic relief as Speed's playful younger brother, Spritle, and Chim Chim, respectively. While definitely a case of style over substance, SPEED RACER is a movie meticulously designed to appeal to families and kids, especially the Spritle-like young ones. |

Speed of Darkness $13.99 No one does maudlin quite like the Irish, and on their fifth studio album, Speed of Darkness, Flogging Molly show once again that no one does Irish quite like them. With a blend of rock and Celtic folk, the band continues to keep things more pastoral than punk, adding drive where it's needed without ever taking away from their use of traditional instrumentation. Like rain on a shining summer day, Flogging Molly's more traditional approach allows them to cultivate a sound that's plaintive without being overly depressing, delivering lines like "It's not a good day left to be in a fight/Living is hard through the struggles of life" with a smile on their faces and a bounce in their step on "Don't Shut `Em Down." While Flogging Molly hasn't done much to innovate on their sound over the past decade or so, it doesn't feel like they have to. Rather than growing stale, Speed of Darkness shows a band that's only grown more confident in their style over the years, performing songs like "Rise Up" and "Revolution" with a self-assuredness that allows the listener to let them do their thing without worrying about their bona fides, giving them the chance to draw us into their world without ever questioning what they're doing. If you're already familiar with Flogging Molly, then Speed of Darkness isn't going to disappoint, and if you're not a fan yet, there's no better time to jump on the wagon than today. ~ Gregory Heaney |

Speed of Sound $20.99 Canadian metal lifers Anvil were enjoying a small resurgence at the turn of the century. The group was in the middle of their most prolific release schedule since their early-'80s heyday, when discs like Metal on Metal were garnering serious press and respect within the metal community. It seemed possible that the Toronto outfit might break into the big time and join metal heroes like Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Accept, Metallica, and only a few others who were selling out concert tours without the benefit of any radio airplay or mainstream publicity. But as metal moved away from the margins and into pop consciousness, Anvil lost step, and through a series of bad business moves and bad records, the band fell out of favor in what was becoming mainstream metal. Then, in the late '90s, a lineup finally solidified after many member changes and Anvil released a string of decent, but dated recordings that were basically ignored (especially in America, were the group's '80s style had fallen desperately out of favor). Their audience might be small, but judging by the amount of material that Anvil managed to release so many years after their initial success, the group's fans were still loyal and that loyalty was rewarded generously on Speed of Sound. Most importantly, the 2000 Hypnotic release is heavy, which is surely a priority to Anvil fans. Songs like "Park That Truck" demonstrate a Mot?rhead-like speed and relentlessness that's refreshing and almost timeless from a metal perspective. While Anvil might have been out of step with the times, this record demonstrates that the band's metal instincts are healthy and reliable. ~ Vincent Jeffries |
