Roofing Shingle Technology: SBS Ain't No BS

A problem known as 'thermal cracking' has been a well-known issue effecting traditional fiberglass shingles. These types of shingles have a tendency to expand and contract due to changes in temperature. As a result, stress builds up and produces tears or cracks in the shingle.

As all Midwesterners know, winters in the heartland are rough, and installing traditional fiberglass shingles doesn't make a lot of sense. The solution? SBS—also known as Styrene Butadiene Styrene. SBS technology provides enhanced flexibility and strength not found in fiberglass shingles. SBS is a thermoplastic rubber, which modifies the properties of the asphalt in some of today's modern shingles. This rubberized ingredient creates a more elastic shingle in low temperatures than its old-school fiberglass counterparts, and yields a number of enhanced properties.

For example, the flexibility gains achieved through SBS technology can aid shingles in meeting higher wind approvals, achieving greater fire resistance ratings and most importantly yielding greater impact resistance. Specific to impact resistance, incorporating SBS into a shingle's asphalt formulation has been known to help the shingle obtain the coveted Class 4 Impact Resistance rating—certainly coveted by any homeowner who's roof endures grueling Midwestern hail, snow and wind storms. Asphalt shingle products such as StormMaster® LM, StormMaster® Slate and Art-Loc® are all based on a specialized SBS formulation and can provide the ultimate weather protection for your roof. Not only that, but the increased durability provided by SBS technology will also ensure that your new roof will be looking new, longer. If you're entertaining bids for a new roof, be sure that your roofing contractor isn't selling you some BS shingle. (Ask for SBS instead.)

Mounting is a process in which the photograph is attached to a display medium. You can choose the most apt medium for your photos based on your requirements and budget. You can also add your own personal touch to the photo mounts by choosing different designs, borders, and other details.

Professional mounting techniques help you achieve museum quality photo mounts. For maximum preservation of photo mounts, pH neutral, acid-free, and non-warping substances are generally used for mounting.

Professional photo mounting is done in various methods using different kinds of materials. Some of the commonly used methods are wet, dry, and spray mounting techniques. In the dry mounting technique special adhesives are used to attach the photo to the board, while in the wet mounting technique, glue is applied between the photograph and the board. In the spray mounting technique, adhesive is sprayed on the back of the photo, which is then mounted on the board.

Photo mounting boards are mostly made from three materials - single-weight mat board, foam core, or styrene. Since styrene mounting boards are extremely smooth, they prevent your photographs from warping. Photos are mounted on styrene mounting boards using materials that are pressure sensitive. Mat boards cover and protect your photographs from damage due to water, mold, moisture, or mildew. These boards come in a variety of colors and designs that you can choose from. Foam core boards are also great mounting mediums since they are extremely sturdy yet lightweight. They are ideal for mounting art work, photographs, as well as textiles.

Once you choose the type of photo mounting board, select the appropriate size depending on the photo that you want to display. Enhance the look of your photos with professional photo mounting services that are available at AdoramaPix!
